A lot of people seem to think that if you believe in free speech, you shouldn’t be concerned by Sarah Jeong’s tweets. This is foolishness. While we should never stop people from speaking their minds, we should always judge their words when they do. Otherwise, what is speech for?

Some people confuse support of free speech with endorsement. That is absolutely NOT correct.

I wouldn't want Twitter to block her ability to tweet what she has tweeted. I'm not sure I even have a problem with the NYT hiring her. The most interesting part of this case to me is the way it reveals race-based double-standards.

Absolutely. Understanding your opponents' views can serve to strengthen your narrative and, importantly, can help to further expose your own positionality, providing more clarity to your own views. Without scrutiny, free speech ceases to be developmental.

Free speech for one does not preclude others expressing their freedom to criticize. I wonder if this hiring will affect NYT circulation.

Yeah for sure. Ppl can express opinion and we shouldn’t stop that. We should confront w opposing opinion or ignore completely (for Flat Earthers for example) but they can talk. I don’t have to listen or agree.

Jeong's tweets should not obstruct her employability. However, I would like the NYT and other progressive publications to acknowledge the growing pervasiveness of "selective enforcement": Some people who post offensive tweets are punished; others, such as Jeong, are given a pass.

I don't need any acknowledgement from them. You already know the score and so do they. It's pretty evident who they hold to a lower standard.
