I thought racism was judging people based on their race, not their religion.

Modern racism is less about biological/racial superiority (which of course still exists) than cultural differences between ethnic groups

Who decided this, though? Why can't we just stick with the dictionary definition?

Because racism isn't static phenomena. It has various permutations which emerges within particular historical, national and local settings and thus can't be reduced to a single definition pertaining to biology

You're using circular reasoning. Let me rephrase my question; why misuse the word "racism" when you can just use the term "religious bigotry?"

Because "religious bigotry" in many cases shares the same crude stereotypes as biological racism i.e. that different social groups share inherent and unchanging characteristics from which they cannot escape. In this case that all Muslims are inherently responsible for ISIS etc

"In many cases?" So, not in all cases? And therefore, you concede that the terms religious bigotry and racism do not mean exactly the same thing, and that by using the one in the stead of the other you are being imprecise and potentially causing confusion?

If you can't see the correlation between "all blacks are lazy" and "all Muslims are ISIS supporters" then we're done here

There may well be a similarity between the two. But that doesn't make it okay to abuse language. Helicopters and jumbo jets can both fly. Does that make it okay to call a helicopter a jumbo jet?
