Google has made research too easy. We no longer need to put effort into finding out things. This is bad for our investigatory powers, because digging for info both sharpens the mind and grants supporting knowledge of the answers that are sought. We are losing knowledge to facts.

You'd think so, but huge numbers of ppl don't really know how to use Google. So much so that we even considered putting on a university course called 'Shall I google that for you?' cc @sarawingategray @vinwalsh

The new challenge is how to narrow the search spans. The old problem was how to find out anything at all.

The annual King William's College Quiz is basically a scavenger hunt using google. Takes me 3 or 4 days to get through it, but I always learn a lot.

same thing happened round my way when omnibus replaced horse & cart. Suddenly it became way too easy to get to library - which, by way of potentially undermining my thesis, only came into being when the omnibus first stopped there - thus making knowledge accessible to all sorts

Research with google is more like a 'reveal' giving a dopamine hit with little or no rumination involved.

True. The only saving grace is the yet unevolved ability of "making sense" and connecting it to problem solving. That fortunately is still a WILL issue remaining still with those you have the intent of discovering kr driving a solution.

I'm always suspicious when hearing that something "sharpens the mind", given the lack of cognitive transfer. What sort of supporting knowledge am I not getting now with Google?

In logic there’s content and form. Google gives us form because we think content is the most important. I Def think form. You can write a whole thesis then know where to find the data to test said thesis

Gentle counterpoint: for the truly sincere researcher, Google requires even more effort because the haystack is bigger than its ever been. And the more discerning you are, the less likely you are to be fooled by fake needles.
