Counterpoint: making traditionally evil creatures into cutesy protagonists is a good thing, because fairy tales are bullshit, "evil" is a useless term, and people need to learn that even those who appear monstrous can, with enough knowledge and imagination, be understood.https://twitter.com/thomaesplendor/status/1017998872713547777 …

    Taylor Patrick O'Neill @thomaesplendor
Unpopular take: making traditionally evil creatures (vampires, monsters, dragons, etc.) into cutesy protagonists in children and teen pop culture is nefarious and dangerous. It dismantles the intelligibility of the fairy tale and subconsciously minimizes inherently evil traits.

The tweet isn't necessarily my POV, but a counterpoint I think is worth pondering.

I agree with you, but I also see the value in some fairy tails / fantasies teaching kids that some people, (regardless of understanding them), will go to great (often violent) lengths to crush your free will and spirit. I love Pans Labyrinth depiction of fascists for this reason.

        I wouldn't really consider Pan's Labyrinth a fairy tale.

Hot take: create fiction with cute Putin, cute China, cute corrupted secret agency people spawning regimes in the third world, so that we think of each other in terms of dialogue

In the US many of us are hosting the Hollywood version of the Law and Order meme. In this variant, the good guys are justified doing anything--including breaking laws--to stop the bad guys. It subverts real law and order in the name of fighting an extraordinary "evil".

Yes! It's also completely unsubstantiated that creating cutesy alternatives would take away meaning and importance from the non-cutesy original. I would argue that *at worst*, the cutesy alternative doesn't add anything new.

The thing I find annoying about this whole thing about preserving, sanctifying stories to protect moral "distilled" "truths" Is the simple fact that it ignores the massive literacy boom that happened over the last 2 centuries and the ability of modern technology to propagate ..2

Newer stories on an unprecedented scale Those were stories made at a time when an extremely small percentage had the ability to create stuff like that In this age we are obviously bound to have much better stories conveyance through much more advanced media formats

Same reason they want to eliminate competition in sports and "everyone wins a trophy".

Counter counter point: most who call fairy (folk) tales “bullshit” have never read and know nothing about them and/or are constitutionally incapable of gleaning value from them. I dunno about the og tweet, just think they have some value.

Maybe “Disneyfication” plays into it, w/ the “evil” part in the og tweet, the old ones aren’t really good guys vs bad guys.
