Far-right are nostalgic for a world that never was. Far-left are hopeful for a world that can never be.

Pithy, but many on the far-left are no more impossibilist than the liberal philosophers who created the very philosophical coordinates of the present world. Whereas variants of the far-right (from capitalist accelerationists to avant-garde Futurists) are anything but nostalgic.

Haha, well, true, which is why I don't trust these types of sweeping aphorisms. It's a form better suited to phenomenological, metaphysical or asethetic statements than sociopolitical observation.

Twitter is really only good for broad statements that relay general truths. There is little room for much else.

Insofar as that's true, Twitter is unsuited to these observations. But Twitter is also a hypertext medium & even short statements can suggest nuance rather than embrace reductionism. Even broadly, the far left is often nostalgic &, albeit perversely, the far right idealistic.

The far-left generally regard Soviet Russia et al as failed implementations, hence the common refrain "That wasn't true socialism" (corollary being that utopia lies in some novel arrangement). Far-right, OTOH, largely model their ideals on an age of racial purity, ie. the past

Soviet Russia is only one form of potential nostalgia available to the left, others include the UK postwar consensus & Spanish anarchism.

But the far-left are generally united in the belief that a truly socialist state has not yet been achieved.

Nostalgia is relevant to the right and ideals to the left, but these thin concepts aren't mutually exclusive, tell us little & ignore much.

I had 280 characters, which I used to highlight a *general* trend I have observed. I assumed that my audience is smart enough to know that some exceptions and nuances exist to qualify the statement. You really shouldn't expect an essay's level of detail from a tweet.

Perhaps I'm being too pedantic. I worry depictions of the political margins simplify to the point of obscuring. It's fun talking, as always.
