This is seductive. But wouldn't many on the other side of the argument claim that the identity that matters is, at the very least, not the one imposed on you by others?

I'm not sure there is an identity other than the one that you impose on yourself, or that is imposed with your complicity. But this identity is one that typically only plays out in the presence of others.

I was actually thinking more of Sartre, but now that you've mentioned these two guys (who I'd never hitherto heard of), I'll conduct further inquiries!

Vestiges. But, in my experience at least, I tend to quickly forget who I am (or rather, consider myself to be) while alone, and so I make no effort to fit any behavioural mould.

It is relative but so important for self esteem. The problem comes when our identity projects a false self image i.e. a bloated opinion of oneself egotism and opposed to the ego (self esteem)

I think all self-images are ultimately false. But I agree that some can be incredibly useful.

I believe everything we do is for ourselves (unconsciously at times,) and for some reason have issues identifying my own identify. I dislike labels, & that could be why. Aren’t we more fluid than that?

I doubt whether we have an identity in actuality. It could be the roles we play at different intervals in our life which could be the facade for identity. That could be the reason why knowing oneself is a daunting task. Deep thinking required.Interesting Gurwinder.

Identity may too be a function of circumstance, where the only observer is yourself. One may assume an identity (that of a survivor perhaps), born from a challenging situation that one faces alone.
