Happy to share that my article is now currently in press at Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Review I'll summarize the main findings in the thread below, but TLDR: there is no convincing evidence for contingency unaware fear conditioning 1/n

New preprint with Yannick Boddez, , and Iris Engelhard in which we demonstrate that contingency instructions prior to fear conditioning & reversal instr shape fear acq (both on psychophysiological and retrospective awareness measures). Happy to hear any thoughts!

Can verbal information change attitudes? I found this a great illustration (disregarding its biological accuracy - I advice against googling)

"These results provide no evidence for a replication crisis in cognitive psychology. It is therefore unwarranted to generalize from attention-grabbing replication failures in social psychology to cognitive psychology."

We are conducting an individual participant data meta-analysis on trauma-focused CBT for PTSD in young people. We are supplementing our formal search by reaching out to clinical/academic communities for datasets. Please consider getting in touch if relevant. RTs appreciated!

Finally, we believe that the research on mental imagery in fear conditioning relates quite well to contemporary conditioning and episodic memory models that emphasize the role of the representation of future/anticipated threat events. /end

Experimentally, more work is needed to compare different control conditions for mental imagery (no imagery, irrelevant imagery, passive imagery, verbal thought, and actual stimulus administration). 7/8

From a perspective, there is a very interesting opportunity to investigate the interrelation between self-report, physiological, behavioral and neural measures of mental imagery. 6/8

We found preliminary evidence for each of the questions. Nonetheless, clearly more research is needed, as the amount of studies is limited (though quickly developing; the majority of studies have been published in the last 5 years). 5/8

We identified 25 studies that focused on 4 different research questions: - Can mental imagery replace stimulus (CS and US) administration? - Can mental imagery inflate conditioned responses? - Can mental imagery reduce CRs? - Can mental images (ie, intrusions) be conditioned? 4/8

Still, we know that mental imagery is critically involved in psychopathology, such as PTSD and OCD. Hence, we considered it important to provide a review of the available evidence in fear conditioning. 3/8

We address a somewhat challenging topic in fear conditioning: mental imagery. Mental imagery has received fairly little attention in the fear conditioning literature, likely because John Watson was also one of the founders of methodological behaviorism. 2/8

Biggest bonus: invisible work done by (often early career) academics would become recognized. 3/3

For instance, a great constructive review could be acknowledged with a co-authorship. A good critical review could be directly published as a commentary. Big bonus: great incentives to write better (both positive and negative) reviews & easier finding reviewers. 2/3
