“Natural herd immunity” is in the news again (I thought we’d moved beyond this nonsense, but here we are). So I thought I might repost this piece I wrote for TIME magazine on the topic 9 months ago. It’s a zombie idea that simply refuses to die. Ugh.https://time.com/5900024/covid-19-herd-immunity-dangerous/ …

Thank you sono much for your help in order to focus this huge problem we are facing, again, just in this period in Europe (and in many other countries worldwide).

It sounds very Swedish, and from the past year I’d say that’s a really bad idea. Do they ever factor in long covid and post viral illnesses?

Herd immunity is a real but elusive target. All policy is quantitative. Clearly, communities that are less vaccinated are more vulnerable. Herd immunity was developed for cattle, but the concept has its uses with human vaccination. Quantitative targets have use!

I'm concerned about the long term effects of Covid. We have no idea what illness infection with the virus could cause.

I understand why a fossil fuels funded think tank like the Great Barrington people would sow doubt about global warming, but I'm not sure of what their interest is in pushing "herd immunity". Because lockdowns decrease the consumption of gasoline?

Which is more durable: therapeutics or natural immunity? Either one is a kind of variolation, no?https://www.nih.gov/news-events/nih-research-matters/lasting-immunity-found-after-recovery-covid-19 …
