Black History Month begins today. For this leap year, I will highlight some of the enslaved individuals who labored at the University of Alabama. The project was inspired by a Georgetown University initiative and derives from archival research began in January 2015.

Jesuit ownership of enslaved people overlapped with other religious orders. Today I’m in Perryville, MO, a 1.5 hour drive south of St. Louis, searching in Vincentian records for the family of Charles, who sued for his freedom against President Jesuit Peter Verhaegen
