"Of all the amazing things that Republican senators have said in defense of their impending votes to acquit Trump, it is that a president who has been unwilling to or incapable of learning lessons will somehow have learned a lesson by being . . . not punished by them."

it's also really nauseating to see how many reporters and center-to-right operatives are just musing "hmm, what a savvy strategy, expect to see more of this" instead of identifying it as a hugely cynical and deceptive attack on democracy

Interesting thought: what if McConnell had engineered a vote of, say, 62-38 for removal? Trump would have been rebuked for his egregious lawbreaking but remain in office. But that wasn't good enough: he demanded complete loyalty, and, sadly, got it.

As a true patriot and backer of democracy, Trump is exploiting the mess in Iowa to sow the maximum possible divisiveness. Including Jr.'s snide comment: how can you run a country if you can't run a caucus? Because of course the entire U.S. is run by a handful of old farts in IA.

Iowa has a chance to replace its reputation as a national embarrassment with one of progressive leadership: Conduct its primary with by mail. No issues with access. Guaranteed paper trail. A real, fair measurement of candidates' strength. What's not to like?

Let's not forget: Mitch McConnell has steadfastly refused to allow meaningful election security legislation to reach the Senate floor while stymieing most related funding, arguing new laws or mandates would be an overstep of federal power.

The worst part of tonight's nonsense is the Iowa caucus non-event stepped on one of the biggest news stories in a while, which is that we found out tonight that TRUMP HAD A SECRET MEETING WITH THE CROWN PRINCE OF SAUDI ARABIA AT HIS (TRUMP'S) HOUSE A WEEK BEFORE THE 2016 ELECTION

Nice piece on how, post-impeachment, the next Trump crisis is already upon us: At least some of his supporters are eventually going to be exhausted by all the drama (Personally, still waiting for somebody to get serious about emoluments!)

"Yet the impeachment process has achieved something. It has removed deniability from the Republicans. They were enablers; now they are accomplices."

$947 MILLION. NINE HUNDRED FORTY SEVEN MILLION DOLLARS is how much the Trump family pocketed in the first 2 years of Trump in office. Lining their pockets with taxpayer dollars.

(ENDORSEMENT) Please RETWEET if—like me—you enthusiastically endorse for President of the United States. I've lived and voted in both Iowa and New Hampshire and—while I'll —I believe Warren is the *right choice* for the Democratic Party and America.

I'll support and work for any Democrat who wins the nomination, but I'm pulling for Elizabeth Warren. I'd love to see her open a large can of whup-ass on Trump in the debates.

There’s no strategy, only instinct & impulse: “Impeachment‘s making me look bad, so let’s do something to remind everyone’s know who’s boss.”

In the latest WaPo survey, it was possible to "game" the poll by selecting the same candidate for one's 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choices (bad design!). Around 1% of responders did this for all candidates—except Bernie. He had 5% cheaters. Definitely not a cult.

Outstanding piece on 's slump as perhaps a major lost opportunity: Agreeing to end private health insurance in the hope of peeling off Bernie supporters was a miscalculation. Americans overwhelmingly don't want to give up their current coverage!

    1. Anyone who isn't terrified by the declaring that abuse of power, that urging a foreign power to interfere with our elections, that obstructing evidence is not impeachable, and that no evidence is needed, has never studied the emergence of dictatorships.....

The President who used a sharpie to try to alter the course of a Hurricane & enraged the scientific community is now in charge of pandemic response to the Coronavirus. Predictably, he has destroyed everything Obama built. This is an important read.

The framers believed there should never, ever be a President who extorts & bribes vulnerable allies to help him cheat in an election. They couldn't even fathom an entire party that would violate their oath, conspire with the defendant, and cover up the crimes the Pres committed.
