Today is officially publication day for my first monograph. Imagining the Unimaginable: Speculative Fiction and the Holocaust. It's been a crazy ride to get to this point and I'm so grateful to all the helpful and supportive people along the way.

This brilliant video takes snippets from the bestselling game BATMAN: ARKHAM KNIGHT but it swaps the looks of the Batman and Catwoman characters. As a result, the overtly sexualized animation of the female character becomes apparent and laughable:

Super excited to announce that we have at last finished compiling the Decolonising Utopia resources list! It is a rich and exciting collection of works and we hope that people find it useful in their work in utopian studies and beyond!

Another question asks what tech coming down stream is most going to change space flight and other than radiation protection she says that AI will be a real help - labour-saving and making the training easier to open-up access to space.

One note from the Q&A is a plea for science communicators and how effective they are. She says she still gets scientists coming up to her to say how they got into science because she gave a talk at their school when they were small.

Not often envious (ugly emotion) but that I envy you! I remember when she went, she was on Blue Peter and I thought she was The Greatest. She fed my love of all things space and meant I never thought it wasn't for girls.

We need a diversity of people engaging in science and scientific debate to benefit not just us on Earth now, but also the humanity of the future, enabling us to appreciate the majesty and wonder of this remarkable universe.

She rebuts conspiracy theories about the absence of stars in photos of Earth from orbit (ie. it proves the pic is fake) pointing out that if you use a longer exposure and don’t get a bright object like the Earth dominating then you get a view much like what Hubble sees.

Seeing Earth from orbit gave Helen a better sense of the interconnectivity of her biology with the planet. It really woke her up to the fact that we all need to take responisibility for our use of science and policies, and for that you need a population with good science literacy

Maybe new materials will help with the radiation problem. To learn more about growing food in space perhaps we can conduct experiments on the Moon. She shows us the famous “Earthrise” photo from Apollo 8. Contrasting it with the photo of Earth from Mars taken by .

From low-earth orbit the aim is to go beyond to places like Mars. But there are problems here: the big one is radiation. Currently there is no viable solution for protecting astronauts from cosmic radiation. The other big problem is food - how do we grow food in space?

Early in her stay on Mir her tiny bedroom window gained a mark much like this one... This example was is from an orbiting shuttle window and was caused by a fleck of paint travelling in orbit at 8km/s!
