    Defections & outdated airframes banded the SyAAF into a small – but deadly – fleet. Just 6 air bases executed 91% of SyAAF sorties since 2016, with Mi-8/17 helicopters flying barrel bombs & L-39 jets running at night. Barrel attacks killed 11,000 civilians from 2012-2018 alone.

    Why reconstruct the inner workings of Syria's air force? Because in no other part of the Syrian war are so few people responsible for so much harm. Understanding the SyAAF is key to mitigating its destruction, enabling accountability efforts & creating meaningful policy.

    What has been the SyAAF’s impact? While ineffective against military targets, it has consistently attacked civilians as part of its strategy to delegitimize rebel governance. For civilians, this means physical & mental harm, loss of social life & forced migration.
