Christianity cares nothing for the trend of the age; for the trend of the age is a dead thing and a religion is alive.

It is rather a curious coincidence that in every controversy in which I have been hitherto, I have always been entirely right.

One is not supposed to insult America by discussing Banks or France by discussing duelling; why should the Jews be the only people who refuse to be talked about intelligently? —Chesterton

The curtness of the Ten Commandments is an evidence, not of gloom & narrowness, but, on the contrary, of liberality & humanity. It is shorter to state the things forbidden than the things permitted: precisely because most things are permitted, and only a few things are forbidden.

Feminism is against chivalry; but chivalry will always be rather in favor of feminism.

Nine out of ten of what we call new ideas are simply old mistakes. The Catholic Church has for one of her chief duties that of preventing people from making those old mistakes; from making them over and over again forever, as people always do if they are left to themselves.

Men did not love Rome because she was great. She was great because they had loved her.

It is easy to make fun of young Chestertonian men for smoking and drinking - and if these are mere affectations, perhaps such ridicule is justified. But what if instead these practises are really symptomatic of a wisdom their elders lack?

The important thing in life is not to keep a steady system of pleasure and composure (which can be done quite well by hardening one’s heart or thickening one’s head), but to keep alive in oneself the immortal power of astonishment and laughter, and a kind of young reverence.

Puritanism made a man too individual, and had its horrible outcome in Individualism. Paganism makes a man too collective, and its extreme outcome is in Communism.

Love is not blind; that is the last thing that it is. Love is bound; and the more it is bound the less it is blind.

I learned today that GK Chesterton drew this cartoon of Thomas Aquinas, seen here trying to rescue from theological error. And then GKC gave it to the here at 😄

The homeless intellectualism of an unhappy age often uses the term “bigot” for anybody who is sure that he is right and other people are wrong. Every sane man ought to be sure he is right; and, if he is right, then those who contradict him are wrong.
