Survivor of GTA V crunch here. It was hell.

Survivor of COD, KONAMI, DISNEY etc crunch. It's ALWAYS hell. Time for a fundamental change.
-
Just a question, how would affect you a boicot from the consumers? Would it help or would it make things more complicated for developers?
-
Any boycott of such a huge game would result in little more than a rounding error.
@GameWorkers however may have a modest suggestion.. -
A boycott isn't the right way to go about it. All it would do is undermine and insult the effort people have put into the games(even if by terrible conditions). The only way to fix the problem is from the very top. We need to move away from traditional release calendars and hype.
-
Change won't come from the top without effective unions to demand it imo.
-
Sadly you're right.
-
Why can’t game devs unionize? Legit question here from a union member.

This is clear evidence of poor project planning.
@RockstarGames should be hugely disappointed by this headline. -
Oh no, this wasnt poor planning. They've been doing this for forever. The article itself mentions all the way back in RDR1 they got complaints for crunch. Same with GTAV. It's deliberate.
-
That’s distressing to hear. It should certainly be viewed and reported as poor business practice, not used to promote the game.
-
It's very inefficient to rely on tired overworked people to perform tasks. That's how you cut corners or make mistakes. Insane that they are bragging about this
-
You do realise that there will be a rotation of workers. The same Devs aren't going to work for a hundred hours a week. It does only take common sense to know that and basic human rights. Even if the workers wanted to do that rockstar couldn't allow due to a lot of legal reasons
-
Let me take a wild guess and say you haven't worked in games or IT related fields? Crunch is a well documented phenomenon. I'd suggest reading up on it: https://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2018/01/16/crunch-the-video-game-industrys-notorious-labor-problem.aspx … Especially Rockstar has a reputation for some of the worst crunch times in the industry.
-
Or worked in a salaried position at all... forced and coerced overtime is creeping into every industry these days, and it is only getting worse...
-
They trying to re sell it as a good thing - I would fire their PR fools

What Rockstar management thinks this means: "wow, that team worked really hard." What this should be interpreted as: "wow, every manager at Rockstar needs to be fired immediately for their abject failure to budget their resources appropriately."
-
Heard tales of people on suicide watch after working on LA Noire due to crunch then. This is a disgraceful business practice.
-
Yeah but LA Noire wasn’t made by Rockstar, it was made by Team Bondi, merely published by RStar.
-
Either way, the point still stands. Crunch shouldn't be a thing and if it comes to it - that's just piss poor planning from the top. It's not a good work ethic that should ever be expected from an employee - especially when it can cause them mental stress.
