shouldn't we educate each other on what we can do to help prevent abuse at tournaments instead?

No I don't have the solution to this issue, but I damn sure know that gassing each other up via a social media trend is not going to solve it either.

I don't think anyone making them is doing so in bad taste, but the format itself takes up so much space on the TL I kind of feel like it was specifically engineered to push out the "bad" stuff

I agree with you 100% on the part that people that are participating are not trying to do harm or do have bad intentions. The opposite in fact. I think all those RTs are with good intentions, just the effect might not the best, especially in the past 48 hours.

I agree with you 100% dude, I'm glad you said it. It's like people patting themselves on the back for not being a predator; like, congrats? Maybe we should be boosting the voices of the abused and those standing up for them right now??

I understand people wanting to highlight that there are mostly very normal people at events/in the scene. But I feel like now is not the time

On one side : yes On the other side: people are only humans. Some people can't deal with too much negativity. It's not only the FGC posts but also all the other negative stuff that happened 2020 so far. It's a constant flood of negative informations which can stress out extremely
-
Especially when you already carry a lot of stress with you in real life. For example a stressful day at work. When you open twitter and there's only negativity going on as well it can be draining.

That’s because it is. To me it feels like a selfish act to try to gain a positive public image. It would’ve been better if it was “who made a positive impact to you” rather than “did I make positive impact” imo. Even then that could still be seen in the same light as drowning out
-
I don't think people intentionally tried to drown out anything.
