What's up with YouTube mass-demonetizing music channels, @TeamYouTube ?
First @SheetMusicBoss , then @Sully_Orch and now @EDeianamusic .
These are all people who worked incredibly hard, for years, to create transformative content like it's never been seen on the internet before.

sadly the new monetization policy is really bad for some types of content...
@GASpriggs might explain this better, but iirc if you upload “similar looking” content with no performance (aka: not showing there’s a “personality” behind) your monetization chances are slim... it sucks1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes -

yeah, I've seen a new slate of demonetization threads in the YouTube help forums this weekend. It seems to fit the pattern I had previously noticed: YouTube seems more likely to demonetize channels where the YouTuber isn't visible.

But that's just not smart (or fair). Producing a full-fledged instrumental track on the computer isn't something that you can always perform (on top of writing it). Plus, it might take even more time and effort to do that if we're talking of a full orchestration.

Oh, I totally agree. This pattern is systematically biased against musicians whose performances aren't something that can easily be recorded (e.g., synth, electronic, virtual orchestra, etc.,)

to me, what I want to figure out more is how people can successfully challenge/defeat these demonetizations, as
@SheetMusicBoss has. I don't have a lot of insight on this other than, "have a big following and make a fuss on social media" which isn't exactly scalable...1 reply 0 retweets 4 likes -

Exactly. I think YouTube should have a department dedicated towards this as it seems they don't have control over their de-monetization algorithm and all the false positives it's causing, ruining people's lives. I'm sure they mean no harm but it's tough to let them know.pic.twitter.com/Kwht7YBErf

I mean, this is tough. YouTube doesn't share a lot about how the business operates, but they supposedly *did* hire a bunch of people to review channels for monetization. People assume they got demonetized by bot, but YouTube has never said channel reviews are algorithmic...

if it turns out these false positives (but are they really? maybe that’s what yt wants because the big bucks are in the music “personalities”??) come from manual review we’re just one step closer to “demonetized bc you do weekly covers in the same style”

i’m not really concerned with monetization (i survived 3+ years without it and i still am barely below the requirements) but all the previous cases point to a really unfavorable algorithm behavior for demonetized channels = no growth

the situation is more complex than just "demonetized = no growth". It stinks because the underlying complexity isn't transparent.
