Republicans are voting in big numbers. That’s what we saw Tues when Gary Gates beat Eliz Markowitz in the TX-HD-28 special runoff... some thoughts in this thread.
Eliz managed to turn out 12,617 voters, a good showing for a special runoff in Texas — the money spent turning out voters was effective. But not as effective as the Republicans’ turnout operation. His 17,457 votes surpassed everyone’s expectations.
We need to get people out to vote. I still think 2020 will be a blue wave.
How much money did Gates have to spend? I am always sad to lose elections, but if he had to pour a bunch of money into a "safe" district to win, that's still a silver lining that should be repeated.
Reports are anywhere from 1,5 million to 1.9 million that Gates spent on the election. Also Gov Abbott bussed in people, paid for their hotel to canvas for Gates.
I point out that TX is still a fantasy to think that the Democrats can carry. I say they need to focus on the 15 or so states where the fight really matters.
I think Trump likely keeps Texas no matter who the nominee is but there is a real shot at taking the state house so it would be a huge mistake to write that off
From having knocked on doors in Texas and other states in past elections my opinion is that the Dem base in Texas is indifferent to politics. Many don't follow politics much. That makes them really hard to rally to the polls. Dems need to build a political culture.
All for an empty seat. #TXLege doesn’t begin session until 1/8/21. By then, another **general** election will have taken place and if Gates is unseated, will only hold the seat for two weeks. With #TXLege going into May, he won’t cast a single vote. #MoneyWellSpent
