We would love it if someone mentions state legislators at the debates tonight & tomorrow. But we aren’t holding our breath; when you get 6 minutes on nat'l TV to talk it’s tough to swim against the tide of media & public attention to focus on something the press tends to ignore.

Still, we can look for: 1. Someone to acknowledge that states matter in their policy agenda. As the Obama era showed, it doesn’t matter if you have a hammerlock on the executive branch if the states stand in your way...

When a candidate acknowledges that states need to play a role in implementing their policies it indicates they understand that the party they’ll soon lead needs to take a more active role in state politics.

2. Concern for other Dems on the ticket. When you run for president, thousands of campaigns lie in the balance. Especially as local news is hollowed out, which makes it difficult for politicians to differentiate themselves from the national ticket.

3. A message that projects shared values. That means speaking clearly to shared values held by a majority of Americans—an authentic message that people’s lives can be better and that they could help. That’s how you beat an ethnonationalist authoritarian.
