In #lameduck session, the WI GOP-controlled legislature worked under cover of night to strip the incoming Dem governor's power. This is a party w/o a popular mandate, empowered by gerrymandering & voter suppression. When a Dem still manages to win the move is to take their power.
Why do they think they can get away w/ this? Bc they already have. The NC GOP did this in 2016 when Dem @RoyCooperNC was elected. They can do this because Dems consistently underestimate the importance of state politics. State gov'ts are not merely tools of federal power.
In addition, the GOP is passing bills to strip voter rights. In WI, they're reducing early voting, which was declared unconstitutional by a fed judge 2 years ago. And in MI they're kneecapping an independent redistricting commission passed by popular referendum just last month.
And in NC, the #lameduck Republican legislative supermajority (which suffered big losses) is rewriting state election law to effectively put Republicans in charge of elections in every county. Solutions: 1.Everyone, regardless of party, admit that elections have consequences. (Right.) 2.Protect the credibility of elections w/ nonpartisan election administrators & laws that expand voting access. (One party blocks this.) So @futurenowusa is focused on #3...
