Nearly 65% of FL voted to restore the right to vote for 1.4m former felons—the largest expansion of voting rights in decades. Good news! But the GOP still dominates in Tallahassee which means there are ways to slow this thing down. #WhyStatesMatter thread https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2018/12/florida-voted-to-give-ex-felons-the-franchise-now-republicans-are-throwing-a-wrench-in-that-process/ …

Now, FL's Republican elections chief is slowing the measure by asking the GOP-led legislature to "interpret" it. "As a result, the dismantling of one of the harshest disenfranchisement schemes in the country could be subject to delays, confusion, and lawsuits."

"More than 100 years after Reconstruction, the tough-on-crime policies of the 80s & 90s caused FL's prison population to explode, w a disproportionate impact on African Americans." By 2018 1.5m Floridians—including 20 percent of voting-age African Americans—were disenfranchised.

Voters took things into their own hands w/ the ballot initiative this year, restoring voting rights to former felons. Lawmakers must support the will of voters, not try to stall and confuse a measure they approved. #WhyStatesMatter via @MotherJones https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2018/12/florida-voted-to-give-ex-felons-the-franchise-now-republicans-are-throwing-a-wrench-in-that-process/ …
