“Donors on the right, overwhelming, have a narrow financial interest related to their contribution. At the state level, absolutely. The power of states over regulation is the reason that the Koch network broadly has invested so heavily in the state level.”

“There was a huge group of donors on the Republican side who had a huge financial return on investment by taking over states. Democratic donors overwhelmingly don’t have that.”

Without a financial return, people support candidates because it's the right thing to do. That means there tends to be "a collection at the highest-profile races because people are doing it based on what they’re hearing about, what touches their emotions..." (Hi, Ossoff

“Ted Cruz isn’t raising $ from ppl who believe in him as a person. But that creates a challenge at the state legislative level bc you don’t have a connection to a larger zeitgeist." There isn't the glamorous individual that some big Dem donors are drawn to in presidential races.

takeaway: “The responsibility of individual small givers on the Democratic side is greater than it is on the Republican side because we don’t have as many transactional givers funding these things.” (Especially at the state level, where $$ go so far!) #WhyStatesMatter
