  2. Q: Why draw the line at not doing evil? Why not write licenses that require active good? A: We should do everything in our power to bend our privilege and abilities to doing good. But the ethical crisis we face now means we have to focus on the bad being done.

  3. Thinking aloud again: I'm a big proponent of the "don't make a rule you can't enforce" idea. We're already having difficulty enforcing the less ethically-forward licenses.

  5. A good point from : how do we go about enforcing the ethical constraints we put in a license? There was no good answer for that, which is a key part of the criticism of various ethics-oriented licenses.

  6. We have a tendency as developers to think we can come up with things from first principles. We can learn from other industries' experience in handling ethical concerns; we don't have to start from scratch -

  7. Interesting thought from the audience: the victims of software that discussed are often not the users of the software. We've focused too much on the software users and not the impact of the use

  16. Audience member: does a great job of explaining licenses, particularly with "share alike" and similar language. Why aren't they at Me, internally: we tend to think of copyleft as applying to software, but we need to consider other works, too.

  20. A common theme I've heard at and in other places recently is that copyright licenses can't be used to fix all of our problems. Makes me feel better about saying that in my talk.

I've long been a fan of copyleft, it's the kind of thinking that drew me to : humans tend toward collaboration, and that collaboration needs boundaries & guidelines. To me, this is the right amount of boundary to balance people's base instincts & higher morals.
