In 1956, just 28% of dwellings in the Netherlands had a bath or shower (!). All other people washed themselves at the tap, in public bathhouses etc. 10% didn't have running water (down from 20% in 1947); 30% didn't have gas.

Out of the 47 largest "commuting zones" in the Harvard young adult migration study, guess which one...
1. Had the highest retention rate
2. Had the highest net migration, in % terms
3. Had the highest net migration, in raw terms
(answer is different for each one)

And a fascinating comparison of Australia (and France) to the US, in 1991 and 2017. Today, the bottom 30% have higher real incomes in Australia than the US, while the top 70% have lower real incomes.

There is literally only *one way* to make Europe look as a sort of anti-car place - which is comparing it to North America.
But globally, NA is the outlier, not the rule.

Global transport emissions have virtually *doubled* since 1990. Also, unlike other sectors, we see growth in pretty much all world regions, *including Europe and North America*. East Asia is absolutely booming.

I get the resentment because American "expats" can be the worst, but it's funny to call it gentrification when Roma and Condesa are some of Mexico City's most upper-class neighborhoods. Like if a bunch of wealthy Swedish people priced out Santa Monica Boomers, I would just laugh.

Mexico City is being flooded by Americans -- including legions of remote workers drawn by cheaper rents.
They're transforming classic neighborhoods, the housing market and even racial dynamics.
More and more, locals are asking them to please go home.

america is an extremely germanic society where the bureaucratic reforms of the 18c in the great European powers simply didn't take route
the State simply didn't have an engrained role in choosing its future elites across all areas of life - academic, business, political

We know from prior research that people in China's traditionally rice-farming areas pay more attention to other people's behavior--fitting in, tight social norms. pnas.org/content/117/33

Tano not so pejorative, Gallego (Spain), Ruso (any Northern European east of the UK) Turco (mostly Levant) somewhat or highly pejorative appellation for immigrants as a sort of hazing/discrimination I would think, and maybe reciprocal (pure speculation there.)

There are some studies on the diversity of surnames, countries like Spain, Denmark or England have little, France or (possibly) Italy have a lot.
As you say, probably the Spaniard moving never changed surnames, the Italian did, that would partly explain.

This is true in Argentina - the top surnames are mostly Spanish (González top at >350,000) and by the time you get to Rossi (55,000) you are at number 51.

A fellow looked about the relative prevalence of Catalan surnames, Sardinia is a clear outlier, Sicily scores well, but surprisingly enough Liguria and Lombardy even better, suggesting trade was more intense with those...

Migration differs by race/ethnicity not only in how far, but where young adults go. For example, Denver is the 4th most common destination for white young adults who leave home, but it does not make the top 10 list for Black, Hispanic, or Asian young adults.

The striking thing to a gringo ear is how modern he sounds compared to U.S. politicians of the same era, let alone Canadians. Is it correct to say that North American political rhetoric has changed much more than Mexican (or Latin American) over the same period?

#RT

Once again the point about how welfare comparison about Russia is tough because living in Russia is very expensive on the basic level because even subsistence basket you have too much fuel, and lighting clothes due to climate.

Pretty standard outside of North America. At this height sometimes you see two, but this isn’t out of the ordinary. North Americans have an…interesting…relationship to building life safety

As seen in "The Long Goodbye," the most insane[ly awesome] apartment building in Los Angeles. Was this ever really cheap or was the idea of an underworked detective living here absurd even in the 1970s?

Reading a lovely telegram exchange between the governments of British India and of Canada, the former protesting against discriminatory immigration policies by Canada, the latter rebutting the former by pointing out that all Asiatics are equally discriminated against by law.

Haven’t been tweeting because I’ve spent the past few days in Cuba.
This is, in a nutshell, the bleakest I’ve ever seen things here on the ground. I didn’t live through the 90s here but I did live through the 2008 global recession and its aftermath. Things are even worse now.

In Imperial China if you failed the civil service examination enough times you would have to go off and be a bandit in the provinces, so today’s former gifted kids becoming YA authors who whine on Twitter all day is a definite step up.
