  4. This season, the following species are not permitted at any of the Northern California scion exchanges: almond, plum, plumcot, pluot, cherry-plum, apricot, and aprium. The plum bud gall mite (PBGM) Acalitus phloeocoptes is the culprit. Asymptomatic wood could be infected too.

    This also applies to all hybrids between plums and apricots, and to almonds. For now the infected trees are found in Santa Clara, San Mateo and Alameda counties.

    These are the pictures of plum mite galls I took today at Prusch Park in San Jose. The agricultural inspector was on site and he was labeling infected trees in the orchard. We should be checking the plum and apricot wood as we pick it during the exchanges and before grafting.

    Have you seen this bug 🐜? Looks cool, but it's . Take the time to become aware of how to identify this new exotic pest and report any suspected sightings to your local Agricultural Commissioner's office right away.
