Vimeo chooses video thumbnails for uploads, and usually they're terrible, but this one captures how much I love interviewing PhDs! :D

I felt like a failure through most of my PhD, but in my first job after grad school I discovered talents and passion I never knew I had. If you feel like you don't measure up, maybe all that's missing is a supportive environment and good mentorship

Writing an abstract & some heavy duty emails, so as constructive procrastination, here's 10 harmful beliefs I held as an early career scholar. I no longer think this way.

Academic conferences: spend a lot of time brainstorming ideas. Nobody emails you back. Nobody is hiring. Industrial conferences: get three job invites in two different areas just because you are physically present in the building and can hold a conversation

Deciding between Job A and Job B - unsync’d timelines and lack of info and FOMO. gives great advice. “Rather than wonder if an offer represents the one perfect job for the one perfect future you...think abt it in terms of trajectory.”

I have been feeling down on myself for quite awhile. Just wrote out a list of my accomplishments and I already feel loads better. Very timely tweet. Thank you!

What's the thing you like the best, or find most energizing or meaningful, about your current work (hwr you want to define it)?

I’ve mentioned before but some of the BEST prof advice I’ve gotten is “keep a brag folder of all the praise / accomplishments to remind yrself of all that you’ve done.” Great reminder!

I had my first child in grad school. So, for as long as I've been a researcher, I've also been a mom. And a wife. In all these years, a school nurse or teacher has **never** called my spouse at work. Never! About anything. I always get the call. Always. And it adds up.

This is excellent advise! I started practicing this strategy early in my career when I was feeling lost and realized I was doing a lot more than I thought. I try to revisit it on an annual basis now.

To all the students out there: I'm planning a (free) online workshop to discuss PhD programs (what they are, how to pick one) including Q&A w/ panels with faculty & recent PhD grads. It's on April 8th. More details soon!

Feeling bad about yourself? Start making a list of everything you've done. By this point in your career, you've done a lot, and a lot of it you've done pretty well!

"You won’t know for sure that a particular job will be satisfying, or be certain that your long-term career would benefit more from Job A or Job B. You won’t know, most fundamentally, what’s behind every door and how all those possible future yous will turn out."

I'm sure no one actually notices, but if you replied to me and I ignored you, it's entirely possible I never saw your reply.

This might count as a humble-brag, but it's also a Twitter complaint: I often don't see all replies to my tweets. I'm on here a lot (yeah, yeah, I know), and do try to acknowledge responses, but Twitter is shifty and makes it very difficult/impossible on the regular. Sigh.
