My dream last night had me in some kind of messed up Wizard of Oz situation where I was trying to get back home, and along the way I encountered monstrous creatures, cults, and other assorted dangers.

I was just really happy to wake up. Sometimes I realize I'm dreaming and can control it, but this was pretty terrifying.
I'm sorry for you. I used to have a very active dream life but not so much recently. I did sometimes have semi-control in that I could will myself to fly for instance. 
But I do occasionally get the odd nightmare and sometimes it can haunt me for a while. Funny things, dreams.

I have another kind of dream where I'm in that state between being awake and asleep. I feel myself slide out of bed and I fly around the room. Indeed, dreams are funny things.
