I have this as well.
I didn’t see anyone else who had it either so as horrible as it sounds I’m kinda relieved. Crin do you want my save too? I’ve cleared caches and repaired and given the dog a bath to satisfy someone sure it was just dirty. 
Luckily in my case all the affected pets are from other families and can be recreated. But obviously just hoping this can be resolved so it doesn't recur.

So far it's only been Meg's dog but I stupidly put a mod in there that was causing me to not get any strays... playing purely vanilla after I realized that! So, I'll see if there are more when it starts generating them.

Yes I save regularly in different files. Just doing the dishes, then I'll find an older save. Glad you duplicated it!!!
