FREE CHILDCARE sends such a positive signal that parents and children are welcome in academic societies. I am genuinely surprised (in the most positive way) how quickly things have changed since I had my first kid 12 years ago, and conference childcare was unheard of!https://twitter.com/Evol_mtg/status/1222558721051508736 …

The fact that there was free childcare at
#SICB2020 is really amazing; the message it sends to scientists with kids is "you belong here". I honestly get choked up just thinking about it, and wish it were more normal@SICBtweetsHvala. Twitter će to iskoristiti za poboljšanje vaše vremenske crte. PoništiPoništi -

Question for the tree-thinking crowd, can I use the word ‘basal’ to refer to ancestral, extinct lineages, as in: “The basal angiosperms were woody perennials confined to tropical and sub-tropical regions” ????

Do we really need buckets of salt on walkways to be safe? All this salt will end up in Lake Ontario, a few 100 m away.

What evil programmer on the Microsoft Powerpoint development team thought it was a good idea to make shapes with shadows the default setting?

One of the side benefits of moving a lot in academia is that you can track the age of your spices by their grocery store provenance. I just found some cloves branded with Safeway, which I haven’t shopped at since my Masters - 2 int’l, and 5 state/provinces moves away!

Lots of discussion out there about this advice, generally how problematic it is, but one thing I haven’t seen is a discussion of what drives such advice. So, let’s talk about scarcity culture.https://twitter.com/CraigHorbinski/status/1210937118341468161 …

Okay, Wolffia is cheating by skipping the seeds and just vegetatively producing offspring, but doubling the number of fronds in under 30h still is impressivehttps://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11738-015-1951-3 …

I'm trying to track down information on the shortest lifespan in an angiosperm species (ie. from germination to seed). Any leads? The book "Life in Deserts" (1964) says 8-10 days in Boerhaavia repens in the Sahara, but no citation. HELP and pls RT!

Doug Schemske often was famous for saying that if you start a new line of research you need to read 2000 papers in that field before you can make progress. That might be a bit extreme, but I think he was right that many scientists don’t read enough.

You know you have the best colleagues when you need to track down a first edition copy of Fisher 1930 to confirm page numbers and exact wording (compared to your 1958 copy) and you only need to go one office down the hall! Thanks
