Still glad I got my...I don't know if I'd call it a "queer awakening" but it was definitely a formative feeling time, but I got it from the Tamora Pierce books.

It's one of those books that was hugely formulative for me as a kid, but as an adult I look back and wished for something better. Like did the Slytherines *have* to be cartoonishly evil? Why not be more like the Black Robed wizards from Dragonlance? Power hungry but some are ok.

Ambition being evil is one of the incredibly weird values of middle class white folks. Like the mere idea of wanting more than your lotis bad, without caring about why or what that want is for. It’s super weird.

I am one of those people! I find it fucking hilarious that Rowling made it happen for so many people only to realise what she had done many years later

In retrospect, I wonder if the bigger themes of the books were a sort of accident. Like she borrowed the trappings of fascist movements for her villains without understanding them, and so taught her readers to recognize it and other bigotries on accident.

Maybe that's why her "And then everything went back to normal"-style epilogue is so bad

The fans have made that world so much bigger and more inclusive than she ever did. It doesn't belong to her any more. I give the fandom complete credit for my Potter related queer awakening.

I'm lucky that my queer awakening came entirely separate from it. I'm not sure if any media in particular touched it off for me. Was more a time of emotional turmoil and trouble and I... realized who I was again... or more stopped pretending who I wasn't.
