This should really emphasize why DACs save so much power! They're so simple! The 10Gbps signal literally just launches from the SFP connector PCB into the twinax, and lands on the other end!

Today I learned that 400G-SR8 doesn't use an MPO24 connector like I expected, but uses an MPO16 connector, which I had never seen before! 🤔

  4. Bad news for everyone else: Verisign is pulling out of FCIX Bad news for me: it would appear that J root has become load bearing in this cabinet.

  6. FYI, if you're in suite 1400 and you want a refrigerator magnet for your cabinet and don't have one yet, we have spares on our cabinet. If you're not in suite 1400, you'll need to find some creative way to get into suite 1400. 😘

You can only call it "remote peering" if it comes from the foothills of Amsterdam. Otherwise it's just "sparkling transport"

  9. Like many networks, we are implementing a network config freeze for FCIX this holiday season. No configuration changes will be made between 0200 and 0500 UTC on December 25th. Happy holidays!

  10. Moved the switch labels to the cabinet frame, because you couldn't see which switch was which underneath the fiber... 😬

  14. Of course, there's plenty of other political and logistical reasons why we settled on the hard numbers we did, but the statistical reason is one of the most satisfying.

  15. Today's new FCIX members are Minnesota VoIP (AS32621), Arrow Group Inc (AS20119), and Your Town Online (AS11472)! All at 10G!

Chart from a telecom provider on what traffic is looking like inside their network today. Now accounting for 1% of the traffic on their network, which while now huge, it has leapfrogged several other services and is listed as the #34 protocol out of 1307 defined.

More spelunking with : We're on the east coast now, and EdgeCast/Verizon now appears, with a pretty large share of the traffic, while Fastly's share increases and Akamai, Level3 and Limelight shares decrease.

  19. To support 64k or 1M Ethernet frames, you'd need to change the checksum used to protect the frame, which would be a compatibility nightmare (as opposed to 9k jumbo frames, which... nevermind)

  20. Ever wonder why Ethernet jumbo frames only bumped the MTU from 1500 to ~9000? Why not go bigger, right? It's because the mathematical error protection provided by the 32 bit CRC checksum used on Ethernet frames falls off a cliff above 9k.
