I see this point of view a lot. That skeuomorphism was a crutch we as society needed but have now outgrown. I think this sort of thinking is incredibly misguided and damaging.https://twitter.com/heyhaigh/status/1102073040475750400 …

You’ve discounted research, designing for user intent, narrative and iteration. There’s your finesse. Skeuomorphism was a visual device used to train users on how to use phones when we transitioned from the physical form to digital. It was a solution of the time and that’s all.

‘Give emphasis to the content’ usually just means I have to go hunting for the content. What’s UI what’s content is blurry and unclear. Everything is harder to navigate and view.https://twitter.com/Freerunnering/status/1102068476926218240 …

Pre-iOS 7 design didn’t just look better, it was also easier to use. The visual affordances allowed you to easily see what was content, UI, interactive, etc… and made apps easily glanceable. Out of the corner of your eye iOS 6 is understandable still, iOS 7 is a white blob. pic.twitter.com/pU9tDl2F1u

Humans also don’t change very much, the same things that made iOS obvious and easy to use originally still make it easier to use than correct designs even for experienced users. Lighting, shading and depth effects are all things humans are hard wired for, using those…

…links into things humans are already good at processing quickly. The design trends away from things like gradients and row separators makes content harder to differentiate, to compensate whitespace is added to allow you to tell things apart…

…and so information density goes way down. I frequently have less actual content on my iPhone X screen than I did on my iPhone 4 screen, despite it being way bigger. All because the information density is so low in most apps now.

I made every one of these counter-arguments before on the blog. No one cares, it's ideological.

I’d appreciate a link to the post? I was thinking about writing a blog post on the subject as I’m not really getting through to the people in my twitter replies very well. I imagine yours is already better sourced and argued than mine would have been though.

Even if that was true, there shouldn’t have been the abrupt change in iOS 7, maybe just a gradual reduction in things like the leather stitching.
