As iOS devs we champion adopting Apple's accessibility tech like voiceover to make apps accessible to a wide audience with diverse needs. This is, without a doubt, a good thing to do and I'm glad Apple puts such a focus on improving tech in this space. (thread)

”lighting a cigarette with a nuclear weapon” story going around. US did at least twice. 1) Ted Taylor on June 1, 1952 (from Miller Under the Cloud). 2) for shits and giggles apparently in 1955. It made its way into the official DOD effects studies video.

I have to travel with my 12” MacBook in a couple days, and I almost forgot to start decompressing the latest Xcode beta. 😬 That was a close one. 😅

And a single frame of big Mario stored as an rgba image would take up all the RAM the NES had. Mind blowing how so many great games were made with such limitations!

Something else that's always fascinated me is that the entire Super Mario Bros game takes up less disk space than a single jpg screenshot of it.

After a couple years of tinkering, I'm releasing XamariNES! It's a cross-platform NES emulator using and ! My goal was to make it easier for the next person to write their own emulator as well. Enjoy!

Here’s the doorslam that appears when you install Selfie Art. Note there is NO escape button. The FREE FOR NEW USERS button shimmers and animates. The header, note, says you can “access all features for free”. Most users would likely tap FREE at this point. But: RED FLAGS.

I never would’ve thought to try this.

It makes perfect sense that you can charge the AirPods case using the Apple Watch charger, but for some reason I had never tried it. Neat.

Your best bug fix is time. This is one of my favourite sections from Software Design X-Rays, and should influence how we work with legacy code.

I've now interviewed 12 engineers about the differences between traditional and software engineering. I learned a lot! I'm putting the interviews on pause while my Real Job gets in the way, so here's a sneak peek of some things I learned. How is software different from trad?

Most of the people I talked to were much happier in software than trad, for this reason. Better work environment, better working process, less inertia and org-rot. But most also missed the dedicated requirement and design time, and- most of all- the social importance on quality.

Almost everybody I talked to was really jealous of version control. They wished they had it in trad. Same with pull requests and automated testing. While trad makes better products, they're much less efficient per unit time, due to poor tools and poor processes.

But there's a lot of ways software does better too. In particular, we seem a lot better at PROCESS. We're more willing to create tools that improve our ability to engineer, partially because we use the same skills to make tools and products. Best example? Version control.

What does each field do better? We all know we tolerate buggier software better than we tolerate buggy turbines. Part of that is that trad invests a LOT more on design and requirements: you might diverge from the plan, but you have a plan to diverge from! The products are better.

Now that I’ve added VR support, I’ve actually found it quite useful as a debugging tool. Sometimes it’s useful to see what’s going on clearly in 3 dimensions, with full camera control.
