❗️ I just released my first OSS project: Classic Finder. It's a clone of the classic MacOS Finder, written on the modern Mac dev-stack to run on your modern Mac! Check it out: .

Shortcuts is cool. I’m really excited about it. I’m impressed Apple is even willing to offer something like this for iOS. It’s complicated, but very powerful.

iOS 12 and we still need a Shortcuts workflow to rename files including the file extension 🧐

There's a reason old-stye diffs are popular. I only check headers for documentation these days, the online docs are too clever and not convenient at all. I first started learning Cocoa in the Xcode 1.0 days when Apple's docs were straightforward & amazing. I'd be lost today

There's a thin line between telling folks that programming skill often matters less than team skills, product sense, & grit -- which is usually true -- and telling them programming skill *doesn't matter*, which is such a transparent lie that no one believes it.

This is among the weirdest/funnest artifacts I have: Inside The Personal Computer, a pop-up book about “the wondrous world of personal computers.” It’s a “sensational new book teaches you everything you need to know.” And it’s from 1984. Shall we…?

Honestly the biggest thing scaring me away from developing anything (further) for the Mac is Swift. All of these breaking changes are a good way to sink any project you are working on. Yet Obj-C appears to be left to rot.

The new style is horrible. Every time I see a doc in the new style I just go back to the Google results and find a blog post or something else to read instead.

I’ve believed for years that ‘robots.txt’ should explicitly be ignored, given how many sites abuse it.

If you're struggling to find an Apple developer document you know exists, it's not just you. 's robots.txt disallows /library/archive/, where all of the old docs now live. Apple's own "Search Documentation Archive"...doesn't search the archive.

Here the launchd team is leaving a note for the quicklook team. It's printing out this message into a file buried deep on my hard drive, printing it out on one assumes every one of the millions of MacBooks out there, in hopes a quicklook team member will someday see it and notice

Fun fact! If you look through the logs in (and this is not a new development, it's always been like this), you'll find it's mostly used by Apple engineers to leave each other passive-aggressive notes

OK, extracting my float into a one-line function in its own object file, and compiling just that part in real MPW, worked great! Now my player movement actually functions on OS 9
