I have a feeling that Sam has heard most, if not all, of the arguments for compatibilism and still finds himself a determinist. Why? Because the Self is an illusion. If there is no Self, there is nothing to control the course of life. Something like that.

To the extent that 'free will' exists, I think it is a minimal thing. However, as you've pointed out, there is *something* that is able to cancel out a pre-determined course of action/decision. Even if that is .00001% of the time, it is still *something*.
