I mean, look at all those dots, though.
My brother (raised in Phoenix, college in NoCal) came to visit few years ago. Picked him up at BWI, we go to Cross St then Lexington, go back to my place in Hamilton. He goes “I’ve seen more Black people in the last 3 hours than I’ve seen in my life.”

The absence of black folks in the PNW with east asians being the primary minority group was kind of a culture shock when I went out to visit, you can immediately tell you're in a different part of the country
Illinois is 63% non-Hispanic White.
Yeah Illinois is in many ways very demographically representative of the country as a whole but the rest of the Midwest is a lot more white and obviously outside of Chicagoland Illinois is like the rest of the region
There are many cities as diverse as this one throughout the Midwest. Having grown up in one, I also never interacted much with the white burbs/farms.
amazing that they still vote democratic regularly.
Relatively large urban areas and increasingly purple suburbs are what keeps most Midwest states competitive. The rural areas are deep red pretty much across the region.
To me as a southerner, both the Midwest & New England freak me out. Just feels weird seeing that many white people. And I’m a white people.
(Partly because after hearing my southern accent too many racists have tried to “welcome” me.
At least in New England.)
I likewise blend in, even better w/ a Midwestern accent, i.e. "no accent".
But I've found New England to be "ok white" because places like VT, Portland ME, and Cape Cod are liberal and tolerant. Mid-PA and farmland Nebraska feel very weird though. Different whiteys.
