iOS 8 randomises the MAC address while scanning for WiFi networks. Hoping that this becomes an industry standard.pic.twitter.com/oGsZMtydUo

@nathan19th @stroughtonsmith MAC addresses are heavily used by both advertisers and intelligence agencies to track people's location.

@FredericJacobs @nathan19th @stroughtonsmith @_nb does it then use the real or generated MAC once it joins the network?

Saying that WiFi MAC addresses are randomised only to push iBeacon is wrong. Bluetooth LE uses random addresses too. https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/NetworkingInternetWeb/Conceptual/CoreBluetooth_concepts/BestPracticesForInteractingWithARemotePeripheralDevice/BestPracticesForInteractingWithARemotePeripheralDevice.html …

@FredericJacobs not only that but Mac addresses have no exposed privacy controls, ibeacon does. Silly

.@FredericJacobs is this Apple being privacy conscious or just trying to get people onto iBeacon?

In iOS 9, location scans and auto-join scans (until authentication) will be done with randomized MAC addresses too.pic.twitter.com/RbSmvgBxex

@FredericJacobs I feel like I've missed something - what's the benefit of that? Your real MAC will still be in the air if you connect, no?

        0 replies 0 retweets 0 likes
      2. Frederic Jacobs ‏@FredericJacobs 9 Jun 2014

@interpipes It's used for surveillance by private companies (analytics) and intelligence agencies. Example: http://euclidanalytics.com/products/technology/ …

@FredericJacobs Hrm. Then all they'll do is start giving away free wifi using common public SSIDs. If you have tinfoil hat, turn wifi off.
