I'm not deflecting any blame here regarding the Tories but reading that I'm sure there's another common denominator here.....the EU. How come there's so much poverty around Europe if the EU is apparently our protection against austerity? It's not!

Austerity is the main cause. In my opinion Socilsim is the answer in or out of the EU.
-
Yeah and ideally a Lexit unshackled from the Stability and Growth Pact that's been a barrier to defeating austerity in all EU member states. The latest example Italy and before them Greece.

The jump to that conclusion is truly incredible.
-
Definitely is not.

You're right, it's staggering in fact.

And no coincidence that Finland with lowest rate of poverty and probably one of the best education systems in the world

Which again is remarkable given they spend less time at school, have 10 weeks summer holiday and hardly do any homework. It’s almost like someone had a plan from top to bottom ...

Appalling. And there’s Jeremy Corbyn risking the increase of that percentage by backing Brexit.
-
Will the penny never drop? Poverty isn't principally about EU membership, it's about domestic policy first and foremost.
-
Obviously. But it will be dramatically increased by Brexit and our ability to deal with it hugely impeded by Brexit.
-
Poverty will only be increased after Brexit if the same policies are applied. The expected GDP drop is what, 8%. Do you know what 8% of sod all is?
-
No! People will lose jobs, homes, livelihoods through Brexit irrespective of who’s in power. Plus there will be both a hugely reduced tax revenue and a much bigger demand on the welfare state due to increased unemployment making reversal of austerity impossible.
-
We can build houses. Despite what neoliberal governments have led you to believe, it's quite easy. Poverty now, under the EU and the tories is the worst in Europe according to that. Worse than Greece. Worse than Greece.
-
The EU has allowed the UK an alernative to its former manufacturing base, in financial services. The wealth created from this has not been fairly distributed which is solely the result of ineffective taxation and austerity, UK government policies, not the EU.
