Each winter, hundreds of people are admitted to hospital each day for respiratory issues - caused by any number of viruses. But will the NHS just test for Covid, asks Prof. Carl Heneghanhttps://www.spectator.co.uk/article/will-covid-cause-a-winter-crisis-in-the-nhs- …

It’s standard for >10,000 admissions to A&E for respiratory illness over winter months. Dozens of viruses can be responsible - this year, Covid will certainly be amongst them. But, Prof Heneghan says, this will present a quandary for those interpreting the data:pic.twitter.com/GLASyoMIwb

“There is a golden opportunity for the government to prospectively test all those who are admitted, not just for Covid, but for the other common pathogens. It is possible that searching only for one pathogen may miss the others.”

Genius. In a time where there is not enough lab capacity for covid tests, let's test for other pathogens too.

Yes, that medical professionals every day look at symptoms and make decisions based on years of training. They aren't sitting with crosswords waving by everyone to a covid unit.
