It’s not that the young are wedded to socialism - it’s that they’ve never heard the case for conservatism. My Telegraph column, now online:https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2019/04/25/phoney-war-old-young-no-way-secure-conservatives-future/ …

A Conservative or Conservative-led government has been in power for nine years. How can it be true that the young have ‘never heard the case for conservatism’? Might it not be that they’ve heard the case for conservatism loud and clear and decided that they don’t agree with it?

Maybe it’s that they’ve heard of conservatism, they just think it’s shit?

Seriously? You’ve been in power for 9 years, all my 20 yr old has known is a Tory Government she doesn’t remember the last Labour one, &guess what, she hates it.She hates that there are 2000 food banks, 15milion people in poverty, her £28k student loans&Brexit!Find another excuse!

No, they've *lived* the case for conservativism and most reject it. People in their 30's have only known austerity, the logical conclusion of Thatcherism, most of their adult lives. People in their 20's know nothing else.

They hear the case for Conservatism everyday. Xenophobia, hostile environment, folk dying needlessly on benefits, foodbanks, Brexit etc etc

All we've had the last 40 years is neoliberalism and the last 9 austerity. It's all they've ever known in their lives. And perhaps they are sick of being shit on by it. Not being able to get property, zero hour contracts, tuition fees, whilst the rich get richer.

I grew up in the Thatcher years., I saw the case for Conservatism then. I've lived through nine years of austerity. It's not attractive.

Oh and when they live through austerity and are told there’s no alternative, and then suddenly the government magics up billions to buy votes, they know what conservatism in action really means.

They pretty much grew up with the "case for Conservatism" - which might explain their aversion.
