@mikeal right -- that is def a constraint. I believe Erlang was first developed with small low-memory switches in mind tho, iirc?

@_crossdiver yes, which is why the way it processes binary is so nice, strings -- not so much.

@_crossdiver if you want a good in-depth rant about the Erlang VM you should talk to @damienkatz ;)

@mikeal @_crossdiver Erlang on iot devices is a bad idea imo. Erlang is fairly heavy on memory and start up time.

@damienkatz @mikeal @_crossdiver as a high level lang on a VM that isn't true. Not the same as asm/C/Ada. But perfectly fine in many cases

@_crossdiver @JohnHaugeland @t_sloughter class of machine in a iot lightbulb is smaller than arduino, which is still too small for Erlang.

@damienkatz @_crossdiver @JohnHaugeland @t_sloughter We ran phone switches on boards with 16mb not that long ago... All Erlang.

@_crossdiver @damienkatz @JohnHaugeland @t_sloughter It was the JAM VM, BEAM's predecessor. It was not modified.

@_crossdiver @damienkatz @JohnHaugeland @t_sloughter That was the memory you had available. The first version of BEAM was as small.
