Yeah but apparently after 60 we can't have jobs that use our skills, we have to work in garden centres or B&Q.

How about remote working? For example https://weworkremotely.com And other reputable remote working portals - yes there are scams abound. But now decent remote-first companies too.

I’m a ‘freelancer’ but have long term clients with long term contracts. You don’t have to have a ‘job’ to have security, especially if you can charge a good whack for your expertise

I'm a freelancer whose main client has just decided to mothball their site. And my other clients are all "now you see them, now you don't." This is not the first time a stable source of income has simply evaporated overnight. That is not "security".

as you know, people are wary of hiring someone older and more experienced than themselves. ageism is endemic in the professional jobs market.
