Does anyone have a bunker I can borrow for a while? This is my column today:https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/nov/07/david-attenborough-world-environment-bbc-films …

That's a wee bit unfair. He has raised the issue of plastic pollution of the oceans to public notice.

I would say that programme succeeded despite itself. See:https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/sep/06/save-earth-disposable-coffee-cup-green …

He’s a naturalist he never put himself up as an activist campaigner - like Johnny Morris don’t expect so much the information is there but I don’t see people switching to renewables switching bank accounts nor making active demands for less plastic etc

What I find bizarre and frustrating is how Attenborough - with all his knowledge and vast BBC resources did not naturally become an activist! How can you spend your life learning and presenting and yet not become protective of that thing you are engaged in? I don't get it.

Don't blame Attenborough. Does a love of wildlife translate into action for the environment? No. E.g. the RSPB has a million members, twice as many as Labour, but has near zero political clout. And the Greens can't poll above 3%. There's little public support for the environment.

I watched Blue Planet 2 episode repeat on telly yesterday BBC2 Episode 4. It was largely about plastic pollution in the oceans and how not just the bits are dangerous but the chemical breakdown is infecting animals to the point that whale milk is killing their babies with toxins.

I agree with that. Where I disagree is that it should be his responsibility to offer solutions.

Are you talking on the behalf of the humanity, or is it the royal "we", when you say "he failed to teach us to protect nature"? He certainly did not fail to teach many, and he directly spoke about environmental damage at least on some of his films.
