“You shouldn’t bring your daughter to events—not a good look for a mom.” “Try not to mention your daughter—ppl will wonder why you aren’t w/her.” “Who will watch her while you’re in Sac?” 👆🏻All asked, or said, to me during my first campaign for —in the East Bay—*in 2018*.

It's amazing how many people don't even question whether it's OK for people to vote out of pure spite, as retaliation against people who called out stupidity without actually naming any particular people, & judged them solely by their public actions. I.e., "spite-voting is good."

Upthread, he'd declared Douthat to be "one of the best columnists around." Imagine believing that about a person whom you also believe is "wrong about most things." This is the "intellectual" version of Amusing Ourselves to Death. An explicit endorsement of style over substance.

If I had to boil all our our social and political problems down to one cause, it would be this: We've created a world where adhering to principles, and believing that some ideas are better than other ideas, marks a person as either a self-righteous elitist or a rank hypocrite.

I keep seeing this sentiment. Republicans say something that's absolutely bonkers, and people characterize as being too bonkers, something nobody will take seriously. But Trump's approval rating has been higher in the second half of his term than it was in the first. It works.

I just realized again that MSNBC is still named after Microsoft. I'm not making any kind of point here, except that it's weird.

You know who deserves the most blame for the republic falling? The enablers. Not the GOP ghouls, but the people who empowered them, declaring that Hillary Clinton was no better, that Trump's crimes are SOP, that "neoliberalism" is what motivates Trumpers. Lefties, not righties.

I honestly don't get this. Forty percent of Americans ARE this dumb, and those are the only "Americans" these people care about. Why do so many otherwise smart people keep assuming, "Oh, nobody's going to believe THIS lie. THIS will be the lie that gets them to wake up."

Check out the opening to this NY Post story, by , , and . What the hell has happened to us? What the hell have we become? I will again note that, as with Bret Stephens, the problem isn't only moral deficiency, it's also hackiness.

Obama fucked up by not prosecuting anyone. Yes, it's hard to make cases like that, but cases should still have been made. And if they were, we still would have gotten the Tea Party and Trump. I bet 90% of The Forgotten People have no idea whether anyone was prosecuted or not.

One has to wonder why these "populists" seem so intent on making excuses for fascists. One clue: most of them, ostensibly deeply disturbed by corruption, have little or nothing to say about the most corrupt president by far, who is in office committing crimes *right now*.

In fact, I've seen almost none who complained about economic issues, or certainly the financial meltdown, *at all*. Maybe one or two, incidentally. I've seen them asked by reporters about it, & THEN they say, yeah, that was bad. We know what motivates them because they *tell us*.

Since 2015, I've looked at many thousands of Trumpers' Internet profiles, looking for one person who expressed rage over the financial meltdown, or economic issues generally, more than they expressed rage over libtards, snowflakes, Mexicans, or Muslims. I've never seen even one.

I'm still plotzed that sentiments like this are still widely believed among the "populists." Despite mountains of observable evidence, they think that people joined the Tea Party, then went for Trump, because nobody was prosecuted for the financial collapse.

Some people are against stabbing babies in their brains. Baby-stabbers and their supporters, however, say that stabbing babies in their brains is perfectly acceptable.
