The author reflects the dominant absence of understanding of religion – especially the Catholic Church – that has dominated the "professional" foreign policy community for decades. Secular "science" misses the most important motivators of human action.

The cultural and religious preambles to politics, areas that in my experience most FSO's and "game theory" IR grads have no language or experience to grasp. That includes knowledge of these areas in the US as well. If I may - the "secular establishment elites" don't have a clue.

I agree “secular establishment elites” don’t have a clue. They think it’s 2018 & nobody really believes this stuff anymore. It’s why they don’t get the drivers of Islamist ideology either. There are many religious people who still take their old books seriously. Fascinating.
