It really jumped out to me how few of the core players from the Rays' 2020 WS squad are still with the team. While not in fire-sale Marlins territory, they’re up there — and unlike those Marlins, Tampa Bay has been winning after the churn. https://neilpaine.substack.com/p/the-rays-embrace-the-churn…
Neil is one of the few people my Father actually liked. He is, of course, a true professional. You should hire him.
But more than that, he is a true mensch/friend today, tomorrow, and beyond.
Well, I'm finally doing one of these. I just got word that my time with @FiveThirtyEight is at an end. It was a joy to be able to write about analytics and sports for nearly a decade, and I want to thank you all for reading over the years.
Folks, I need your vote for my podcast (Margins of Error) to win a #Webby! Please help me out 😊...

sent me a copy of his upcoming book “You Are What You Watch.” Making data accessible and comprehensible to the layperson is not easy. The book manages to do something really tough to pull off: be fun, accessible, and impart knowledge.
Folks, I need your help. My pod is up for a webby, & we're tied for the lead. Plz vote for me here (Margins of Error): http://wbby.co/31804N
In exchange for that, I give you a photo of Cody & me.
You can also retweet and include a photo of your dog/cat/goat etc!
The fact that a LOT of people critiqued this performance in 1968 is a helpful reminder that people can be very wrong in the moment.
A great rendition that was well ahead of its time and beautifully showcases the American spirit.
Watching Texas vs. Miami... I obviously thought Texas would win (were ~95% chance)... Person watching next to me called Miami... then said after the game "I don't trust the polls".
Help me.
I still get the biggest thrill out of tracking a snowstorm. It's not day of tracking so much (though I enjoy that). It's before the storm is on the radar... Seeing all the different modeled possibilities... and when it actually all comes together (rarely), it truly is magic.
As of 10 am, 49.2 inches of snow fell at Buffalo Airport. That's 2nd (to Dec 2001) for all time snow event in BUF over 4 days. When u combine that 49.2 w/ what had previously fell in Nov/Dec (49.7), it's ~99 inches. That = ALL time record for Nov/Dec snowfall in BUF in 80+ years
I'm so out of it I just wrote 335 words of the story I originally told my editors I was going to file instead of the story I actually promised them. OOPS.
Maybe it's because I've been at work since 5am... or maybe it's because it's 5pm on a Friday... but I just walked down the hall carrying my computer like a boombox and blasting/doing the dance to YMCA.
There is an Eagle fan contingent on the train I'm on... One guy is wearing a Troy Vincent jersey... All of a sudden I hear "holy" followed by an expletive... From behind, Troy Vincent comes up and greets the guy... Nice moment.
After a 6 month trial, a new study finds that 4-day work weeks rewarded both employees AND employers! So...why aren't we doing this already?? CC: all my bosses.
Whenever somebody says to me "i can't believe people voted for that person", I have the perfect response: I can't believe people voluntarily watch soccer.
