I still suspect this is less due to ideological changes vs liberal not being as much of a bad word. Otoh look at how white Ds have moved on race.
-
Exactly. It’s a combination of those two things. I imagine a good chunk of the moderate and conservative Dems are non-white.

Unfortunately, the meaning of graph is misleading, because the middle part of the Democratic (and Republican party too) have fled the party, and we are left with parties of extremes both expounding bad policies and leading to absolute gridlock in Washington.

There was a whole paper written on this based on this same data that contradicts your opinion that the U.S. has become more polarized, centrist. http://gss.norc.org/Documents/reports/social-change-reports/SC39.pdf …

That might be just as much of an issue of Trump staining the word conservative than an actual shift in perspectives, right?

A lot of them have always been liberal, but the word itself had acquired a poor image for a decade or two. Actual liberals acted allergic to being called it for a long time. That's why they used the word "progressive" to identify themselves. Same people, just a different name.
-
Probably something do with the Neoliberals in the Dem Party. Used the label but didn’t pursue a “liberal” agenda in many ways. Forced actual liberals to go by progressives.
