So just so I'm very clear on what I did... I used Google Topics for this https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=2018-12-31%202019-03-17&geo=US&q=%2Fm%2F0dty9d,%2Fm%2F01_gbv,%2Fm%2F08sry2,%2Fm%2F06p430,%2Fm%2F01qh39 … This is what ProPublica's election bot uses and what Google Trends itself used on its 2018 TX Senate pagehttps://trends.google.com/trends/story/US_cu_rt6ubWUBAABlMM_en …

Topic trends r what my friend
@natesilver538 suggested using last week for Beto (https://mobile.twitter.com/NateSilver538/status/1106561474414153729?p=v …) Possible Google Trends isnt fully capturing "Beto-mania"? Yes.@patrickruffini has got good stuff (https://mobile.twitter.com/PatrickRuffini/status/1107264760666640389?p=v …). But wut I said last night is what we usually use

Quick update on this... I'm asking Google what they suggest using. I think gap between "topic" trends (which usually capture everything) surrounding Beto & search trends of just "Beto" are wide enough to warrant further investigation.

Could it have something to do with the fact that people basically know who Sanders and O'Rourke are already or nah
-
I'd say this is despite the fact that Sanders has far higher name recognition. From MorningConsult earlier this month, the number of people who didn't know who Beto was was ~10x higher than the same for Bernie. (~30% vs. ~3%). Much higher "heard of, no opinion" as well.
