I have fixed a bug in my 2019 racing game Max Downforce. Frame rate code was not being applied to the steering controls. What took quite some time was installing Linux on a laptop and figuring out how to make an AppImage all over again! 😅

Instead of working on a game I have given my website a new look, with a color scheme from this very nice website:

I had not seen competitive Tetris before but this is actually exciting (2016)

Adding different themes so there can be three tracks in the final game, this being the night forest theme. allows for the palette to be changed while drawing, useful for this effect. The code is now getting close to the pico8 token limit so I need to wrap things up. ;)

Instead of against a timer, the player now races against opponents for first place in this game in the making. They also go faster on the inside than on the outside of corners, so it is fair to say it is a simulation rather than an arcade racer at this point. 😅

Instead of an arcade-style time limit per lap, the player now has to race for first place. So opponents will overtake you again if you slow down too much.

The not so simple hills are working and made it possible to add jumping. The player can still control the bike while in the air. I also added engine sound. It sounds a bit like pc speaker car sounds in old pc games, so it is not entirely out of place in this game. :)

I just noticed the curb stones on the right are twice as wide as those on the left. So simple. 😅

This is in fact a simple approach to adding hills to a pseudo 3d road: simply raise or lower the road. More complicated methods can produce realistic looking roler coaster effects (where the horizon is also moved up and down) but I find it hard to get that effect right.

Every segment now has a height value. The screen is drawn from back to front and the horizontal lines are simply raised by the height values. Extra segments need to be added inbetween to create the slopes, and entities are not yet considered, but it is already showing promise.

Basic opponents are now in this racing game, as well as a high speed drift effect which affects the bike's handling. Next on the todo list is an attempt at hills.

Adding road side objects (and an animated bike sprite) to my racing game. They are scaled 8*8 sprites. Maybe I should try using multiple sprites per object, but this blockiness also has its charm.

Just as I feared my game is starting to look like my other game Thunder Desert GP, only smaller. 😅 Seriously though, this has been very enjoyable so far. I also like how you can create an 8-second gif of your game by pressing a button.

In keeping with my habit of making games I have made before, I am now working on a small pseudo 3d racing game in PICO-8, a bit like a complicated Hello World. The PICO-8 editor is tiny but enjoyable to use. It is a code, sprite, map, sfx and music editor all in one!

This app has mysteriously stopped working so I have unpublished it. If I make apps in the future it will be through native android development, using kotlin.

Nine years after the android smash hit that was Doggy Bounce, I have now published 'Robo House'. It is a platformer written in Lua and Love2d. 🤖🐈
