BTW when you start seeing people with the hex avatars, don't reply, don't quote retweet, just ignore or block them. Twitter hasn't missed that a lot of users hate this. Twitter is counting on it.

Twitter, like most social media, just wants engagement, and getting into a screaming match is just as good if not better than everyone getting along.

Twitter understands that this is going to be unpopular but more people are going to get into angry fights with the people that use this than are going to quit Twitter altogether, so their metrics will only go up.

And besides, it's cult tactics 101 that "the rest of the world is evil and hates you". Telling individual N/F/T fools that they're horrible people is only going to reinforce their beliefs and keep them in that culture.

By all means, rant about how bad this shit is in general, but bullying individual people over it is likely to backfire and cause them to dig in deeper.

Hexagoons? Hexagooners? Hexafools? There's gotta be a mean name we can call these fools.

Like publicly broadcasting "I got caught in a pyramid scam and I'm paying Twitter 3$ a month to make sure everybody knows it!" isn't bad enough

Remember, despite being a multi-level thing, in pyramid scams there's only two positions: 1. Evil scammers 2. Fools who are losing money
5
1,810
Crytypocurrentseas and associated things like NTFS are textbook pyramid schemes being slightly obfuscated by the use of hard to explain technology.
11
1,815
And by the way these two positions aren't exclusive. That's why pyramid schemes WORK. because once you realize you're a fool losing their money, the only way you might get some money back is to turn into an evil scammer for the people below you
3
1,504
And hope you can get away before the whole thing collapses. So everyone, even the people being exploited, has a reason to continue to support the scam and to make it seem legitimate.

And it's been said before, it's very difficult or even impossible to confine people of facts when not understanding those facts is making them money.

So convincing people out of this scam is hard. The best bet is to try to stop them recruiting new members, by making sure more people understand its a scam
1
1,089
Because pyramid schemes are unsustainable. They depend on new marks showing up and buying in to continue paying the existing users
1
1,023
If that flow of new fools dries up, the whole thing collapses as the money dries up and every scammer decides now is the time to run.

But eventually we'll run out. Everyone will be in the "no thanks" or "fuck you" or "already burned" or "already scamming/being scammed" camps and this will end.
2
966
I've said before, I think we're already in the collapse phase. The end is coming and the scammers know it.
4
1,040
That's why this seems to be accelerating. Countries are banning it and increasingly people know that these are scams.

And if you have a bunch of Fake Gold and you know it's going to be impossible to sell it next year, what do you do? You work extra hard to sell your remaining stock NOW, before you're stuck holding the hot potato.

It's gonna get worse before it gets better. And it's getting worse because it's about to get better.
4
967
The end is in sight and it's a close-out sale on the scams. This is their last chance, they gotta try to make the most of it.

Getting replies from people who have me blocked. That makes sense. I can't see them. The only reason you'd do that is to try to get free advertising off my thread.

Well guess what? Twitter is really bad at showing replies to tweets that aren't the last in the thread.
2

And you see this? I made this thread on a PHONE. I hate phone keyboards! They make it so much slower to type. This is the "I'm not left handed either" moment for ADHD ranting: let me get to a decent keyboard and I'll type until the stars burn out.

and FYI since this got a lot bigger than I expected... in this reply where I mention "cult tactics":

I didn't mean that N/F/Ts are a cult or to diminish the dangers and harm of cults. That was just a bad comparison because I couldn't think of a better way to explain that marketing trick, and cults were the first thing that comes to mind.

it's a thing that happens in a lot of (abusive) communities, where people stir up the idea that the out-group hates them, as a way to keep people in the in-group.
1
473
And then when they're dicks to the outgroup and the members of the outgroup rightly respond with anger and blocking and such, the in-group members go "omg the outgroup really does hate us, good thing I have the in-group!"

you see it in everything from nerdy fandoms to political movements to forums to scams to cults. but cults was the example that came to mind when I was typing that, and since I was in a hurry I didn't think to pick a better example or do a better job of qualifying it.

and I just want to make it clear that I'm not trying to downplay the seriousness and danger of cults here. nor was I trying to dilute the meaning by calling the NTFS community a cult. But I didn't do a good job of phrasing it, so it might read like I was.
