Apparently what had happened behind the scenes was that Apple Computer had offered 1 million dollars to Apple Corps to be able to use the name "Apple" on the music store.

funny coincidence: Look what just showed up on local craigslist this morning? An Ensoniq ASR-10 Sampling Keyboard! This is a 1992 model, which has a 3.5" HD floppy drive, but it uses a custom format for the disks: They store up to 1.64mb, and aren't DOS compatible.pic.twitter.com/PUtJMyPyEo

Apparently Ensoniq designed their own format so they wouldn't be stuck with the 8.3 filename limitations of DOS. The file format is somewhat related to the PC format, as apparently you can decode it with standard PC drives, using the right software, like EnsoniqFSpic.twitter.com/2RHYgroKWk

Interestingly, the ASR-10 also supports SCSI storage devices like hard drives and zip drives, but it does it by creating floppy disk images on them, and using the custom filesystem inside them. I guess so they wouldn't lose the advantages of their custom FS when using them?

Another interesting thing about these samplers: They have to boot from a floppy disk! The OS for them is stored on a floppy disk, and without the disk, the sampler is useless.

And this one on craigslist? It doesn't have a disk. So you'd need to find a disk before you could use it. https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/msg/d/oakland-sampling-keyboard-rare-ensoniq/7060505318.html …pic.twitter.com/BhISTSmSuv

10$ says that disk is 1. hard to copy, and (also because) 2. it's encoded in that weird 1.64mb format

There's even commercial software from Chicken Systems, Inc to handle these disks. http://www.chickensys.com/products2/software.html …pic.twitter.com/iEDknnVcdx

good news, it turns out you can write new disk images for these samplers: http://www.ensoniqsamplers.com/epsasr/026.html But apparently you need windows 9x to do it.

I found a document about how Ensoniq formatted their disks. It's weird... and annoyingly they don't cover the ASR-10, which uses a DIFFERENT format to the format used on the earlier EPS/VFX-DS/SD1/EPS-16 keyboards, or the SQ-80, or the Mirage.

I'm not gonna go into the details (not on the ass-end of a thread this long) but that info is here: https://web.archive.org/web/20120305165444/http://thoralt.ehecht.com/download/Ensoniq%20Floppy%20Diskette%20Format.pdf …

linked from a sort of one-stop-shop page of documents here, from the developer of EnsoniqFS: https://web.archive.org/web/20120305165315/http://thoralt.ehecht.com/ensoniq.html …

which I need to edit into wikipedia, because they link to that page, but it's apparently been down (or at least partially down) since 2012.
