99.99% of all games will never have any source available and it's really great every time we do get one. It'll result in fixes, ports, mods, and inspiration for other game devs.

so they deserve a lot of praise for doing it at all... and having the response be so focused on "LOOK AT ALL THIS BAD CODE" is just going to discourage all the other gamedevs out there who have a game they might have been thinking of open sourcing.

bad code in an open sourced game _will_ get fixed. but a closed source game will die and vanish into history.

Don't get me wrong, bad code can be funny and I don't really blame anyone for laughing at it and sharing snippets and such. but just remember who might be listening. I'm sure there's tons of gamedevs who are going to see those tweets and reddit posts and articles

and for some, it's gonna shift the balance on if they release their game's source or not. You might get a few hundred points on r/ProgrammerHumor/ but we might lose games in response.

Anyway, this is more depressing than I'd like to be posting, so let's all congratulate
@terrycavanagh for releasing the source of VVVVVV. It's awesome that he's done that, and the fans of the game should all be happy about it.Prikaži ovu nit

my alt take is when a game i like gets open sourced and the code is ugly but otherwise runs fine, i feel a whole lot better about my own ugly-but-functioning-fine code. i also avoid most programming communities like the plague, so maybe that helps.
-
definitely, this too! the code may be bad or ugly, but it worked, and the game was a success despite it

I have doubts that anyone responding with code criticism has ever shipped a full finished game before. Or any software at all. Also worth noting: VVVVVV was/is a _huge success_ so clearly perfect code means fuckall in the end.

Someone told me--TODAY--that I clearly didn't know anything about Final Fantasy VI, and must not have played the game. I wrote an academic book about the game.
